You will never have to wire money to anyone in order to actually win anything. In these cases, this is not a contest. Instead, these types of “contests” are just a way to defraud innocent people and gather information that can be used for identify theft and other illegal purposes.
Some forms of instant cash sweepstake are completely legitimate, although your odds of winning may be low, since the pool of other entrants is quite large. Other contests are scams, and require far more information than is necessary to enter them.
